June 25 Olympia Woodworking Guild Meeting

Presentation:   Methods for Making Shaker-Style Furniture

Presenter: Bill Cornwell

Bill Cornwell has been in the woodworking business for over  30 years. His exceptional skills once earned him a nomination for the Smithsonian due to his mastery of the craft. With customers spanning across the United States and beyond, his reputation precedes him. Each piece of furniture is meticulously crafted, paying homage to time-tested techniques. Mortise and tenon joints, dovetails, spline joints, and dado joints are skillfully incorporated into his creations.

Bill's journey from sweeping floors in a cabinet shop to becoming a celebrated master craftsman is a testament to his dedication and love for woodworking. His creations breathe life into wood from the past, transforming it into functional works of art that honor our forefathers' legacy.

During this presentation Bill will focus primarily on thee aspects of his work:

  • The considerations he relies on to the select lumber he uses for each particular project with a special consideration for whether new or old lumber best fits the design considerations.

  • His use of hand planes and the techniques he has developed over time.

  • Some lessons he has learned from his own experience about what it takes to be a commercial woodworker.

Here is a picture of a beautiful cabinet Bill recently completed.
