next meeting info

The next meeting planned for Monday, March 23rd, 2020 at the Arbutus Folk School Woodshop has been canceled due to concern over COVID-19.

Our featured speaker for our next Guild meeting is Yup’ik (Alaska) tribal carver Jennifer Angaiak Wood.

Jennifer Angaiak Wood (https://yupikjen.com/) an artist of Yup’ik, Irish and Italian descent, and was born and raised in Fairbanks, AK. The Yup’ik side of her family comes from Tununak, AK, on the coast of the Bering Sea. Jennifer started carving masks when she took an Alaska Native Art class in high school and has been mostly self-taught after the unexpected passing of her teacher, Ron Manook.

Since moving to the Seattle area in 2015, she has met and worked with other artists, who are helping her learn to use more traditional tools such as bent knives and adzes. Jennifer’s inspirations include historic masks, stories, and her time spent in Tununak growing up. She usually adds modern materials and concepts to her work, and she uses her art as a way to connect with her Yup’ik heritage and bring a little bit of Yup’ik history into the modern world.

Previously Held Meetings

Grady Mathews was our February 2020 Presenter

“I have been designing and building fine furniture and architectural cabinetry in the Seattle area since 1976. The evolution of my work has been evident in the various shows in which I have been featured. I show primarily in the Northwest, but my pieces reside in homes and businesses throughout the United States and abroad. I began my woodworking career designing and producing interior architectural accessories. Teaching myself the skills of the craft, I soon began designing and building larger furniture pieces as well as architectural cabinetry. I presented my first solo show of furniture at the Northwest Gallery of Fine Woodworking in 1989; I also received an American Crafts Award for my Gazelle Table in the same year. Another of my pieces was included in a book titled Creative Designs in Furniture. I am a founding member of the Northwest Gallery of Fine Woodworking and have been extensively involved in the development of this successful cooperative.”

Past Meetings:

The next meeting is Monday, January 27th, 2020 at the Arbutus Folk School Woodshop.

Our featured speaker at this meeting is John Corzine.

Our presenter is John Corzine. He will show his lampshade making processes. Jerry Kehoe visited John’s shop and was impressed with his design and use of jigs to make these shades out of thin wood. You can check out John’s website at jmcorzine.com.

Our meeting will also include the usual attractions; the audience Q&A, a Safety Segment, and of course, Show and Tell.

Another reminder for you is that the Guild is no longer keeping your name badges. You must bring them (and take them home!)
